Gzhel is the name of the village 32 km from Moscow. This name is also applied to the beautiful artistic porcelain ware made there, painted with cobalt on a white background. The first written mention of Gzhel dates back to 1339, and from the 1770-80s, Gzhel had become the
center of artistic majolica manufacture in Russia.
